HS Student Email and Outlook Proposal

For Mr. Turton's Leadership & Computer Apps students, a comment to this post is mandatory and will be counted as a quiz grade for this marking period. Your grade will be based on the points in parenthesis per the rubric below.

Our school's administration and teachers are considering implementing student email accounts and a Microsoft Outlook account for students in 7th through 12th grades. We are "seeking to understand" the needs and concerns of the students. In the end, we want to have technologically adept (proficient) students learning useful life skills in a safe environment. So, we are "beginning" our decision process "with that end in mind".

Helpful Background Info

  • Student Email Accounts - available to all students, monitored by school and network administration. Think of it as a locker - students use them as a priviledge and take care of what goes in and out, but the school owns them and has the right to check inside and ensure safe and appropriate use anytime.
  • Microsoft Outlook - available to all students from school or home (like Sharepoint), get a better understanding by watching some Atomic Learning Tutorials (user: aldenstudents, pass: bulldogs) for Outlook 2007 PC platform. Or, just do a quick search for Microsoft Outlook and see what you can learn.

I think that it would make it a lot easier to catch up on missed work and a good way to remind students of upcoming dates and events.
I think that the #1 problem for a student email is that students wouldn't use it for school purposes. To resolve this problem you could set up consequences for not using the student email for school use.
I think that instead of having to track students down with phone calls and such they could just use the email. They could also use it to deliver grades or reminders to students about upcoming events or distribute review sheets and such.
Microsoft Outlook is a program to help you organize yourself in the everyday.
The source of my knowledge about Microsoft Outlook comes from a google search.
I think that students could use it to prioritze their activities and to keep themsleves organized so they know where everything is.
If the program malfunctions or gets a bug students could lose all thier work.
Normally I go and talk to the teacher and ask for my work while I'm sick to be sent home with my little brother.
The best way is to get your work sent home and then have your teacher clarify when you get back to school.

-I think it would be a great way for the teachers to be involved with their students outside of school if they are on vacation, or happen to be really sick, and they miss a couple days of school. But it's just another contradiction of saying how we are always "on our own in high school, and teachers aren't going to always be on our back".

-A lot of the times, school comes first, but when the student is gone from school it is for a reason. School work is one of the last things they want to think about, so getting e-mails from a teacher isn't really the highlight of their day.

-It's a really good idea to keep students on track, and not have them falling behind on their work.

-It is a program used by Microsoft for email, calander, note taking, journals, and a task manager.

-I actually looked it up on the internet, and found various websites giving me information on it.

-Students will be up to date on all of the things that happen in school.

-It gives us another responsibility, and I personally think it's contradicting the fact that teachers won't be "on our backs" all the time for not having our work done. It should be up to us, and if we don't do it, then it is only affecting our grade.

-I usually call/text one people who are in my classes, or I will check the website if it's a class where the teacher is an active updater.

-I think the best way is to get a family memeber to call the school, and have all of your work set out for you, and have that family member pick it up. So you have all the work at home, so you know what happened while you were gone.

    2. I think that a student e-mail would be beneficial to my learning because I would be able to contact other teachers during school easier and would not have to wait until I get home.

    3. The #1 problem I foresee with student emails is that students would bdo things that they aren't supposed to do and behave irresponsibly with having email at school. This could easily be resolved, however, if the e-mails were monitered.

    4. Another issue I can foresee with student e-mails is that students would be able to socialize during class with their friends instead of doing work. This too could be resolved if the e-mails were monitered, and if the teacher pays attention to what the students are doing.

    5. Teachers would be able to use the student e-mails to their benefit because they would be able to contact the students easily through their e-mails and inform them if they need to get something in. They would also be able to send the student notes/homework if they were absent to school that day.
Microsoft Outlook is an e-mail service where you are able to manage/organize your work, search for what you are interested in, and contact others.

    6. The source for my knowledge of Microsoft Outlook is the Microsoft website and my previous experiences with Outlook.

    7. Outlook would be very beneficial because we could write all of our assignment in the to-do list, and contact teachers or other students when necessary.

    8. Outlook could be a risk to students because they may abuse their freedom and not use outlook responsibly.

    9. Usually I go to the teacher the day after I was absent from school, and get my work then.

    10. I think that the best way to get my schoolwork if I was out is to have a friend get it for me so that I can finish it before I have to go back to school. Then I won't be behind.

How do you think a student email would benefit your learning?
I think it would benefit student learing because if someone was absent and needed help on a homework assignment or specific question they could ask instead of waiting. Also just to get homework if absent.

What is the #1 problem you foresee with student emails and how should it be resolved?
I think the number one problem would be that students would write volgur emails just to be funny or try and start things with other students. I think it would need alot of monitoring.

How do you think teachers could/should use student emails to their benefit?
If a student is missing work or absent the teacher could write them a email to give them work or remind them of what is due. The student really wouldnt have an excuse then for not getting the work

How could Outlook be beneficial to students?
It could be beneficial because students could keep records in the journal and note taking of work they needed to get done or upcoming tests, quizzes and projects. 2. It would speed up projects because then you could send attachments and everything much faster. Thus eliminating the sharepoint which I'm sure is a hassle for many people because it is newer and many don't know its ins and outs. Plus email is much easier seeing as most people know how to use it.

    3. Not everyone knows how to use it. And it requires a level of maturity. To solve it teachers can answer questions that students have because they are proficient at their own email. Also instead of 7th to 12th graders it should be kept in the high school because then that level of maturity should be there.

    4. Another problem is that students may send inappropriate/bullying/spam emails to other students thus breaching the safety and comfort the school is responsible for providing. The solution could be that if one of these messages is discovered the students involved (Those that receive and forward not those that just receive and delete) would have their email privileges revoked and other disciplinary action taken.

    5. Teachers could and would benefit because they can then immediately check if they receive something from a student. They would be able to check the attachments and tell the student if they got the message or not.

    6. I like Outlook. Although i have only had minimal practice/use with it. I think it would be very beneficial.

    7. Well at my internship they use it plus in Student Congress we have to send emails to some companies when trying to purchase something so one of us would send a message.

    8. Students that have no knowledge of Outlook would learn about it and be able to learn the correct way to send emails in some of the business courses. These skills would be used in their future careers.

    9. Some students could be irresponsible and abuse the emails. They could harm other students or the computers if they open/receive virus holding emails.

2.)How do you think a student email would benefit your learning? It would be easy to acess, and would make it simpler to stay on top of assignmentas when I'm out of school.

3.)What is the #1 problem you foresee with student emails and how should it be resolved? Well if kids are like me-they don't check their e-mail everyday and therefore wouldn't see the work that's due. A way to solve it would be making it mandatory to check student e-mail a certain number of times a week.

4.) What's the #2 problem you foresee with student e-mail, and what's a way to reslove it? Students may not always have acess to the internet-say if their wireless netowrk is down or their desktop crashes, and if all their work is in an e-mail format-there's no way to access it. A solution for this would be to have kids store all their work on a flash drive so if something does happen and they can't use internet-they'll still have their assignments saved.

8.)How could Outlook be beneficial to students? Students can use it to upload things like projects and then not have to worry about the hassle of turning in a million papers because it's all online. I think it's beneficial because I would never have to worry about losing the paper that was due last monday..because it would be right in a file on my computer that my profesor can access.

9.) How could Outlook be a risk for students? There's always a chance that someone could hack into your outlook account and steal your projects for their own or there's the everpresent risk of a virus that could completely wreck your computer and all the information on it.

10.)How do you normally find out what school work you missed while out of school? I e-mail my teachers if it's something I'm worried about missing-if not then I'll find out the next day in school.

This could be fixed by not allowing other students to see others account information. 8) How could Outlook be a risk for students?
Outlook can be a risk for students because they can look up things that are inappropriate. There are sites on the computer that they can mistakenly see. Another risk from the outlook because they can be online forever. They can also post things up online for a lot of people to see.
